“The Boys are looking hot in purple!” – Designer Kunal on Desi Boyz

The youngest designer to debut at Lakhme Fashion Week, Kunal Rawal has definitely redefined men’s fashion. Many Bolly stars swear by his style – actress Sonam Kapoor, who has known him since she was three and calls him her “Chaddi Buddy”, speaks highly of him as also Shahid Kapoor whose outfit at the performance at Global Indian Film & TV Honours 2011 was designed by Kunal’s label DStress. Starting his career in Bollywood with Aisha, Kunal will now be seen designing the look of Desi Boyz. He speaks exclusively to BollySpice about this.

What was the brief that was given to you for Desi Boyz? Did Rohit give you any particular pointers?

I have been doing fashion shows and I have my label DStress and have got into costume designing only about a year and a half back. So there’s that shift from being able to do whatever I want to designing costumes for movies. You need to have a heart-to-heart with the director to know exactly what he is looking at because these characters are your director’s characters; he has created them so he probably knows them much more than you do. So the idea is to just get a brief on what the characters are like so you could stick to the script and give the director what he wants so the clothes don’t overpower the actor or his performance and the same time, give something really fresh that will keep me happy.

It was great fun working with Rohit because he is of our generation so mentally we were really close. I have done Akshay’s (Kumar) clothes for the movie and it was absolutely fabulous working with him. And what made it more interesting was that he has done so many movies that he has played out almost all the fashion characters there could ever be in the last 10-15 years. So I had a lot of interesting referral points to see what really suits him and works well for him. And if I may add, fashion is a lot about body language so working with an actor as good as him was

wonderful. Because fashion is just not about the look, it’s also about how you carry it off. And it’s a good performer who makes the clothes look really nice.

What are generally your sources of inspiration while designing any look?

The idea was to be real. Akshay’s character is set in one of the most fashionable cities of the world, London. So the contrast of a real character set in a very fashionable place was challenging. I have studied in London and lived there for some part of my life so I picked up a lot from my personal anecdotes. It wasn’t just about what he was wearing, it was also a lot about how he was wearing it.

How involved are the actors generally when it comes to the look design?

Akshay Kumar was tremendously involved in the looks and the style of his character in the movie because a- it’s a London based movie, and b- he has a very interesting character graph in the movie. I believe costumes are as important as a DOP or how a shot is going to be taken.

Hair, make-up, costumes…these are things that help an actor to get into a character and perform. We had a couple of group discussions and trials where we tried on a couple of things. After the first meeting I think he was pretty confident about what I had planned for the movie and for the different phases his character goes through in the film.

As a creative person do you prefer being left alone to your creative space or would you not mind inputs from different people associated with the venture?

At the end of the day it’s a group effort. Everyone out there is working for the betterment of the movie. And the better the actor looks the better I look. So I would definitely like to take inputs from the actor and the director. The idea is to keep the actor happy, the director happy, staying true to the script at the same time giving something that is absolutely fresh and exciting for me to be a part of the project. The future of Bollywood today is something like this, you know, making good commercial movies with sound technicians and a really nice crew, where every department gets the chance to push the envelope and give something fresh, give something that’s never been

done before.

Which is your favorite look on the boys in the movie?

The aviation suit that I made for the Desi Boyz title track was very exciting because personally I like to create costumes for movies, I don’t like to just style. So we created the aviation outfit from scratch and it was really fun. Another challenging but exciting design was for the song Subah Hone Na De. The concept of the song was that it’s a party song where the guys are just ripping bits and pieces of their shirts off. So it was very interesting to work with Rohit and Bosco, who is the dance director of the song, because I had to create the outfits in such a way that every seam had to be a rippable seam but to the camera it should not look that it could be ripped. And with the choreography coming in, there are certain dance moves which you have to make sure do not alter the outfit and at the same time there was a proper plan of the shots of what goes off. I think that song is going to make a great fashion statement- purple’s back! The boys are looking hot in purple.

What’s the coolest thing about your work Kunal?

The amount of learning that you get to do. We keep moving from project to project; whether its movies or being a creative head of Provogue (two years back). I am also designing the look for Shankar’s Tamil remake of 3 Idiots (Nanban), I have also designed the look for Mahesh Babu’s movie Dookudu – a Telugu movie which released sometime back and has done really really well – so I just pick up work that teaches me a lot and through it I get to learn many diverse things.

Designing is a creative field where you get to create something new. And also we are really fickle people, so moving from one project to another is a complete shift of environment and provides loads of challenges.

What are the issues a designer generally faces while styling the look for a movie? What constraints do you have to keep in mind?

There is a very thin line between trying to create something fresh and staying true to the script. At the end of the day, you do not want to overpower what the character is, what the story is about. At the same time you want your clothes to be noticed in the movie. So it’s important that you work with the right kind of people; people who understand what you do and why you are there on board that project.

Along with the script, you have to keep the character graph in mind. Akshay’s character is very interesting and I hope the audience notices the different changes. We make an emotional graph of the character and the clothes have to follow the emotional graph. So if the character is happy, you end up giving him slightly more cooler colors or neutral colors compared to the point in the movie where the character is slightly upset or angry or falls in love then more warmth comes into the clothes. Also we have to keep in mind, the shooting schedule, so that’s one constraint which we face. Maintaining continuity is another one but that is relatively easy.

Tell us something about the look of Akshay in the movie.

Like I said, his character is based in London so u see a lot of fashion on him. During the course of the movie, his character goes through three different phases. He starts off as a side slacker in the movie so what we did was create a wardrobe and we literally picked up things from this wardrobe we created for Akshay . He is a more go-slow character to start off with, not someone who looks into the mirror and accessorizes his look. That’s when the boys get into this

whole “Desi Boyz” phase, as we call it, where they have a slightly glossier look as it’s about their job. So I got to use a lot of more fashionable elements and I hope they make a trend in the year to come . And it kind of ends with a slightly prettier look. As a costume designer, I don’t like to style too much and pick up from stores, I rather create stuff that is made for the movie and stays patented in the movie and not goes anywhere else.

Thanks Kunal for talking to BollySpice.

Thank you.

Exclusive Report: Heroine Begins!

With a “Roll sound, Camera Action!” Madhur Bhandarkar began filming the highly anticipated Heroine with Kareena Kapoor. The first day saw both Kareena and co-star Arjun Rampal, who plays Kareena’s love interest in the film, shoot their first takes. Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, the film has had its ups and downs but now all is in place and everyone is excited to get going with the beginning of the first schedule. About this first day Madhur said, “The first day at the shoot is always the feeler day. The bundled up energy that we all have is now going to be occupied in weaving together a story that we want our audiences to see.”

Heroine is based on the life and times of a superstar heroine, Mahi from the dream factory we call ‘Bollywood’. The film is a daring, shocking, glamorous, scandalous behind the scenes account of the reality behind the world of glitz and glamour that our film stars inhabit.

Talking about the film Kareena said recently, “Heroine promises a lot as there would be songs, drama and a lot of edginess to the narrative. This is exactly what Madhur’s specialty is; he brings in all the required ingredients in a film in his own unique way.” Adding, “The role that I get to play in Heroine is simply superb and I am pretty much kicked to give it my all. It is already one of the most talked about films of the next year and I am sure that if we all put in the right kind of energy in it, Heroine would be something really special.”

Check out what Madhur and Kareena had to say in these exclusive videos from the set!

The stunning Kareena Kapoor:

We have something else cool to share with you: along with the videos that they will shoot throughout the filming process the director is also going to blog about his experiences! Here are some highlights from the first installment of The Heroine Diaries:

“Today I start shooting for my next project, Heroine. Am I excited, nervous or ecstatic? Actually, I am very calm because movie making is one thing that comes very naturally to me. I am happy for sure, as always, to be on the next project and work after months of brainstorming. But my day has begun with a silent prayer for the victims of 26/11.

Heroine is a very contemporary subject of today’s time. It has different premises and different strata that I am going to deal with here. This movie, like all my other movies, is a mix of facts and fiction. What I could say is different about Heroine as compared to all my other movies is that it is a bigger movie. It has a larger span, more characters, more costumes… a journey that revolves around an actress’ life and showbiz.

After Fashion I am again working with Music Directors Salim-Sulaiman on this project. We have already recorded two songs and they have been finalized. Can’t wait for you all to hear it, but of course there is time in that!

As you all know that the fabulous Kareena Kapoor (Bebo) is playing the role of the main protagonist in this movie. Both of us had wanted to work with each other for a while now. Finally we are and I am sure we are going to have a blast during the shoot. Arjun Rampal, who has been a very dear friend, is playing the lead in this movie. Looking forward to working with Randeep Hooda and Shahana Goswami. This is the first time I will be working with all the actors and I am excited.

This year I completed a decade of being a part of this industry. The journey from Chandni Bar to Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji was so beautiful. This year began for me with the release of my successful slice of life movie Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji and is ending with my next movie, Heroine going on floor, what more can I say. And in all this, you all have been a very essential part of my life. Thanks for all your support and blessings. I couldn’t have come so far without you all.

Ok then, I’ll have to sign off now because it is time again to say START SOUND, CAMERA… AND ACTION!”

We also have shots from the set!

Stay tuned because we will be bringing you all the exclusives about Heroine!

“Desi Boyz was my most enjoyable film to date.” – Shyamali

Growing up on a staple diet of glitz and fashion magazines which adorned her father’s departmental store racks, Shyamali Arora definitely had an inclination towards the fashion world. Graduating as a Chartered Accountancy student from Lucknow, Mumbai got her a job at a fashion magazine where she got introduced to the field of fashion and styling. Starting from styling Ranbir Kapoor’s and Katrina Kaif’s look in Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani, she designed Bipasha Basu’s look in Dum Maaro Dum, John Abraham’s in Force and even styled for Game’s music video Kaun Hai Ajnabee starring Abhshek Bachchan, Kangna Ranaut and Sarah Jane Dias. In an exclusive interview to BollySpice, Shyamali talks to us about her latest movie, Desi Boyz.

What was the brief that was given to you for Desi Boyz?

I have done John Abraham, Anupam Kher and Omi Vaidya in Desi Boyz. The brief that we got for both Akshay and John was that these guys are well placed in a city like London – the movie is based largely in UK and shot over there. John Abraham plays a banker placed in a really good post at an MNC in London,so he has to be very sleek and has to have a very smart look, much like Shia LaBeouf in Wall Street. That would be his look in the first half; the second half due to some circumstances he loses his job and he goes through a change economically and mentally – therefore his look changes completely in the second half where he is defeated in relationship, professionally and in terms of friendship as well.

What are generally your sources for inspiration while designing any look?

I would say that we look for inspiration in the script. We look for inspiration from the director’s vision because Rohit (Dhawan) has lived the characters; he has written the characters and he had a very clear vision of the characters way before the stylists and the designers stepped into the picture.

How involved are the actors generally when it comes to the look design?

Honestly, all the actors, those which I have worked with atleast, are really very hands on with their clothes. They understand the importance of the look and Desi Boyz is a very cool, young film. Everyone knew what their character was exactly about and hence they could bring in their own comments and ideas. Also John is so good with his brand and designers that he knows exactly what suits well on him. Having said that, I think he can pull off any look but John knows exactly what he should be in to do justice to his character.

As a creative person do you prefer being left alone to your creative space or would you not mind inputs from different people associated with the venture?

When you style for a film, you are carrying not only your ideas but the actor’s and director’s as well – not the producers’; I would not like the producers to meddle in my work – because it is actually their vision that you are putting forth. So it’s very different from an AD, or an editorial or a fashion shoot. The director has written and visualized the characters and you are taking your inspiration from that. So I feel the director’s vision is very important. Having said that, when it turns into interference, that’s when designers and stylists cringe but Rohit knew exactly where to draw the line.

Which is your favorite look on the boys in the movie?

I would say definitely the title track ‘Make Some Noise For the Desi Boyz’! We have done some 5-6 looks which are exactly the same for Akshay and John because that is what the song demanded. So Kunal (Rawal) and I worked together on it and it was exciting. And also we got the two most good looking men in the industry with amazing bodies who had worked out especially for this song! It’s a really fun song.

What’s the coolest thing about your work Shyamali?

I get to travel, I get to shop! I am paid to travel and I am paid to shop for the most beautiful people. So it’s fabulous and I won’t trade my job for anything else in this world.

What are the issues a designer generally faces while styling the look for a movie?

A movie is a team effort. So when a part of the structure is not organized or if the film is not scripted properly or it goes through multiple changes or people decide at the last moment that some things need to be included then that’s challenging. I won’t say it is difficult but then that’s when you are pushed as you have to sacrifice your creativity for the bigger picture of completing the shoot because there is so much at stake. So that’s what gives designers sleepless nights when we are expected to suddenly complete something overnight or when we are expected to have a magic wardrobe from where we will procure something by morning.

Apart from budget and time, are there any other constraints you have to keep in mind while designing?

Well there are lots of times when the actor’s shortcomings or weakness comes into picture. Some actors may not be comfortable with a particular thing which their character or role might demand. Also some actors hesitate from pushing the envelope. It’s the actors who have to eventually pull off your look and their image is at stake. So they tend to become very safe with what has worked for them in the past. But as a designer you want to bring in something new so you have to work with the actor constantly and bring in the confidence that this look will work for them. So it’s a huge risk for them and an experiment for us. This has happened lots of times. If you know John’s personal style he’s a very t-shirt-and-jeans or even ganji-and-shorts type of guy. If you let him on his own, he will be in a t-shirt and tracks and chappals. So every time you have to give him something which is a little more dressed up, he would always cringe and say that why do we have to do so much. But sometimes, like especially Desi Boyz’s second half, there were a couple of songs where there was a need to dress him up. So Rohit and I would sit and convince him, you know, that this look is needed. Now, every time when he came back from dubbing I got a message saying that I am so glad I listened to you. So it’s at such times when you feel that it is all worth it. This is just an example I am giving you but I feel we go through this with every actor we work with. I have worked with Ranbir, I have worked with Katrina and Bipasha and atleast once this always happens. 9 out of 10 times it has worked but sometimes it doesn’t so you take it in your stride.

Was it different styling John for Desi Boyz as compared to styling him for Force?

Oh my God, there was a complete change! He was a narcotics officer (in Force), very real, very grunge and Bombay street look. His color palette was completely different. He only wore shirts. John is such a good-looking guy, we had to tone him down in Force. The idea that Nishikant briefed for Force was that nobody should notice that this narcotics officer is such a good-looking man. So we had to bring down his appeal in Force, while in Desi Boyz we had to do the opposite – we had to up his fashion quotient, up his cool quota. Also John’s body changed between the two movies. In Desi Boyz he is lean and well-built but in Force he was muscular and huge – he had some 19½ inches biceps. That kind of physique makes you work very differently. We shot back to back and it was very strange but the look for Desi Boyz and Force is very different.

So Desi Boyz, Force, Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, Dum Maaro Dum, which has been your most enjoyable work experience till date?

My favorite experience would be Desi Boyz because it was a really fun film and a really nice, young crew. And honestly, not one day of pain as Rohit and his team was so organized! But my most exciting film to do was my first film Ajab…I learnt everything in that movie with Santoshji. But Desi Boyz was definitely my most enjoyable. We would party everyday after the pack up. And like I said it was such a young crew that we had a lot of fun. In fact when we finished the shoot in Bangkok we didn’t want to celebrate because we didn’t want the movie to end .

This is Rohit Dhawan’s first movie. How is he as a director? How was your experience working with him?

From the first day I met Rohit till the last day, every idea that he had he executed it the way he had decided and wanted to. Many times, a director decides on one thing but when he comes on the sets he tends to compromise seeing the fact that there are huge stars. He was involved in every department, be it arts or clothes to the T. I would say that he would be the biggest thing to hit the industry out of Desi Boyz. It might be a success for the actors but the person who is going to shine through would be Rohit Dhawan.

Thank you Shyamalee for talking to BollySpice.

Thank you.

Desi Boyz Movie Review

There were a few reasons one would have been looking forward to the release of Desi Boyz. Not only did the movie mark the return of the two hunks following the success of Garam Masala in 2005,Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, but it was also heavily anticipated because it would carry on the run of successes of male-centric films. The last few years have seen a number of such films; Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Delhi Belly and 3 Idiots to name a few. With fresh looking promos which have created a lot of excitement, Desi Boyz was sure to be a film to watch… or was it?

The main focus of the movie is the “brother from a hotter mother” friendship between two gentlemen living in London’s Canary Wharf, Nick (John Abraham) and Jerry (Akshay Kumar). Nick, an MBA graduate, has an office job and an apartment where both he and Jerry reside. Jerry, on the other hand, does a few odd jobs here and there but doesn’t have much stability apart from that. The two couldn’t be more opposite. Recession hits them both and they are forced to become male escorts to ensure they both have money coming in and, more importantly, to show Jerry can get custody of his nephew, Veer, following the sad deaths of his sister and brother-in-law. Problems arise when Nick’s girlfriend, Radhika (Deepika Padukone), catches the duo red-handed.

As an overall benchmark, it would be safe to say that the movie has its good and bad moments. The plot is stronger in some places more than others and this is perhaps where the film falls short. Once it grabs your attention, it’s unable to keep it all the time. However, it has to be said that the freshness and contemporary feel given to the sets and locations is effective for the plot. Filmed in various locations in the UK such as Brighton and Docklands, the backdrops of the film are one of the few plus points.

As performances go, Abraham and Kumar share a truly exceptional chemistry on-screen. They both look great in Desi Boyz, good enough to give the newbies a run for their money. Their performances were admirable but it would be wrong to say that the roles were in any way challenging for either of them. Padukone and Abraham’s new jodi is one that should go far. They not only compliment each other in appearance but also seem to tie in well with one another performance-wise. Chitrangda Singh, who plays Kumar’s love interest, is a much-needed breath of fresh air. Her pairing with the Khiladi is also a good one and should be taken notice of. Singh’s performance as a sexy university lecturer ticks all the boxes, but quite frankly, there wasn’t much in the role to be able to judge the kind of talent she will prove to be according to the forthcoming films she chooses to sign. The child-star, Shraman Jain, who plays Jerry’s nephew, truly shines.

The film also incorporates a few cameo appearances that are worth a mention. Sanjay Dutt plays the “owner” of the Desi Boyz brand and the background theme music of Khalnayak makes a dismal attempt at authenticity. Omi Vaidya brings memories of 3 Idiots while playing Radhika’s (Padukone’s) date. British comedian Jeff Mirza can be seen as the boss of a fast-food joint that Jerry works at.

The soundtrack of Desi Boyz, although consisting of some preppy and feel-good songs, won’t be one that stays in the audiences’ hearts and minds for very long. Having said that, the popularity of the tracks has gathered momentum over the weeks coming up to the release of the film, namely the title track (featuring Abraham and Kumar topless), ‘Jhak Maar Ke’ and ‘Allah Maaf Kare’.

To conclude, it’s wrong to say that Desi Boyz will have you filling up with tears or laughing until your stomach hurts. In fact, it is a movie that sits very neatly between those two extremes in that it will make you laugh out loud in some places and it will also make you feel a little emotional in a few too. Nevertheless, the film’s underlying theme of friendship does well to bring warmth to the heart. Desi Boyz will leave you feeling a little bit more thankful for the friends who remain loyal even behind your back.
