The Don 2 Soundtrack is completely “Don Centric” – Ehsaan
When you think of Hindi film music I bet that one of the first thoughts that comes to your mind is SEL aka Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The trio has been making the stars and us dance to their tunes in many a hit film. This year alone they scored big with the Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara soundtrack. Rounding out the year they have revisited the world of Don. However, this time they went on a bit of different path for the music of Don 2. We caught up with Ehsaan to find out what went into not only the songs but also the background score for the highly anticipated film!
How do you decide which films you want to be a part of?
All depends. It could be the script, the director or the production house.
What was it like to step back into the world of Don?
Don is an exciting project to be involved with. One does not get a chance to compose for thrillers of such high caliber. The moment it was announced we were super excited.
In discussing the music with director Farhan Akhtar what did he tell you he wanted for the OST.
We were taken through the script and Farhan explained to us what his requirement was and what the scripts requirement was. This album is more like an OST.
How is this album different from the first?
The Don 2 CD is completely “Don Centric”; there are no songs like ‘Khaike Paan’ etc. The album is completely influenced and guided by the script of the film and there is a lot of reference to themes, which have been used in the last 2 Don films.
It is not often that you actually get to revisit the characters and what you want to do for them musically. What did you want to do for this one?
Well like I mentioned a lot of the themes, which have appeared in the last 2 Don films, have made a re-appearance in this soundtrack. It’s like the Mission Impossible or James Bond soundtracks, which have a repeat of the theme which one always hears in those films. We have also used a few pieces, which appeared in the background score of the last film as the song themes in this one.
There are some new beats and some new sounds. Tell us what inspired the sound of the music.
It was totally script inspired. We have also used a lot of retro kind of sounds, some old soul like sounds. The soundtrack is a very cloak and dagger, spy like soundtrack and when you see it in the film it will make a lot of sense.
When it comes to singers for the songs, how does that work, how do you choose who sings what?
Casting a singer for a song has to be done carefully and one should be sure that the singer will compliment the song, We have to keep in mind the singers range and timbre so that the song is sung comfortably and the singer can give it its 100%.
Did you have a hard-time choosing who’ll sing the title track?
Well ‘Zara Dil ko Tham Lo’ is not the title track of the film as a lot of people mistook it for.
Was Vishal always your first choice? What about Shaan since he sang the first film’s title song?
Vishal was a clear choice for the’ Zara Dil Ko’ song as he can modulate his voice very well and the song does require a wide tonality. We used KK for the title song of the film, which is essentially the same tune as the last title song, had we used Shaan it would have been the same song all over again.
How do you three bring something fresh and new to each song you compose?
We are always under pressure from ourselves to make sure that the songs sound fresh. It’s also a 3-tiered filtering that the song goes through we make sure that we do not repeat ideas and are always looking for a new way to present the songs.
You also did the background score for Don 2. Is that more challenging than the OST?
Definitely, the score is a lot of work and requires a lot of detailing. This film is a thriller and requires a lot more background score, as there are twists and turns in the script. It took us very long and it is of an international quality. We are very proud of this score.
How is a background score created?
We view the film with the director and discuss his vision of what the background score should be. Then we get into the studio and start the composition and programming with the film. Our computers are locked with the film and it is a long and detailed process creating the music.
Your favorite song on the Don 2 album?
‘Dushman Mera’ and ‘Hai Yeh Maaya’.
Tell us about the gift you gave to Farhan Akhtar.
I gave him one of my Fender Signature line guitars.
Can you give us any thoughts on the film?
It is a super fast moving action thriller. Shah Rukh is fabulous in the film!!!
Looking back what do you think of the music that has come out in the year 2011.
It has been a good year for us with Patiala House and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and now Don 2. There have been other hits by composers like Vishal Shekhar, which is a good thing for the music industry.
Your favorite song of the year?
‘Senorita’ from Zindagi.
Hopes for next year?
That the next year is even better and more creative for us. We have to finally work on our non-film album!!!
What can we expect next year?
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mehrunissa, Delhi Safari, Chittagong

'Practice' Star Rhona Mitra -- Allegedly Crashes Into Biker Chick with SUV

"The Practice" star Rhona Mitra allegedly caused a major David vs. Goliath car accident -- as in her giant SUV vs. a motorcycle -- and now the other driver is demanding Mitra pay up for causing "severe injuries" to herself and the bike. According to a lawsuit filed in L.A. Superior Court back in September, Mitra was driving her 2002 Mercedes Benz G500 around in Venice, CA back in March ... when she collided with a female biker.
The alleged victim claims she was seriously messed up in the wreck -- and wants Mitra to fork over more than $25,000 to pay for all of her pain and suffering ... plus repairs to the bike.
Mitra's rep tells TMZ ... cops believe she was not to blame for the wreck .... but the insurance companies for both sides are talking in the hopes of resolving everything.

Miss USA Rima Fakih -- Arrested on Suspicion of Drunk Driving

Former Miss USA Rima Fakih was arrested in Michigan early Saturday for suspicion of drunken driving ... this according to an attorney for the beauty queen.
Police would not confirm the arrest -- and Fakih even tweeted yesterday she wasn't even in Michigan -- but her attorney, Donald Elder, told the Detroit Free Press, "Unfortunately she was."
Elder told the paper Fakih was "very saddened and very apologetic for the situation that she is in right now."
As for the tweet, Fakih posted around 5:00 PM on Saturday: "Let’s clear things up now.... I’m NOT in Michigan and I’m NOT in jail! Wrong Fakih."
The tweet has since been deleted.

Johnny Depp's hired muscle put a handicapped woman in the hospital Thursday night -- this according to a police report filed by the woman in question.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... 52-year-old Robyn Ecker filed the report claiming she was celebrating her husband's birthday at the Iggy Pop concert in L.A. -- treating him to $600-a-pop seats at the Palladium ... and Johnny was seated right beside her, surrounded by bodyguards.
Ecker claims she was having a blast, dancing her face off ... when she accidentally strayed a little too close to Johnny's table.
According to Ecker, Depp's bodyguards pounced on her out of nowhere -- grabbing her wrists and wrestling her to the ground. Soon as she regained composure, Ecker says she left and got herself checked out at the hospital.
Ecker's assistant tells TMZ, Robyn and her party had been drinking during the evening. Law enforcement sources tell us, Robyn appeared wasted when she made the report.
Attempts to reach Depp's people were unsuccessful.

One of Hollywood's biggest music execs just wanted new
carpeting in his home ... but he allegedly ended up getting the rug pulled out from
underneath him.
Randy Spendlove -- who oversees all music for Paramount and
won a Grammy for the “Chicago” soundtrack -- says he paid $8,200 to a man in January 2009
to install flooring in his home, but instead the guy ran off with the money ...
so now he's suing.
According to the lawsuit, soon after Mark Jerold Sperling
cashed the check, he informed Spendlove he would be, well, spending “the money
for other things” -- and if the music exec wanted his dough back, he should go “ask
Bush for the money.” (At the time,
Dubya's presidency had just ended).
TMZ spoke with a source close to Sperling who tells us his
company has been hit hard by the recession, and although he wanted to pay back
those whom he owed money to ... he just didn't have the funds.
Spendlove is seeking his $8,200 back, plus attorney fees and
costs ... not to mention 10 percent interest.
Maybe Sperling should ask Obama for the money?

Minutes after Brooke Mueller allegedly assaulted someone Friday night, she sashayed her ass into an Aspen nightclub like nothing just happened -- and TMZ has the hilarious security cam footage.
TMZ broke the story ... Brooke was arrested Friday night outside Aspen's Escobar nightclub on suspicion of felony cocaine possession. She was also booked for third degree assault after allegedly attacking someone at a different nightclub nearby.
But right before all that happened, Brooke DANCED HER FACE OFF.
There's no sound -- but you can totally make out Brooke doing her thing ... twirling around, drink in hand, bumping into other dancers. Moments later, cops show up and drag her outside.
You gotta watch the clip. Brooke is currently free on $11,000 bond.

Sofia Coppola is once again casting her lens on Hollywood -- but she's not focusing on movie stars this time, but rather the people who stole from them!
According to our sources, Coppola is developing a film based on the infamous Burglar Bunch. We're told the film, which would be produced daddy Francis' Zoetrope studio, does not have a start date or even a script yet.
Sources close to the project tell TMZ ... producers approached Burgler Buncher Nick Prugo about being a consultant on the film, but he declined. We're told Tess Taylor, sister of Buncher Alexis Neiers, has now signed on to the project.
Calls to Coppola were not returned.

"X-Factor" hosts Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger voted off the wrong contestant Thursday night -- at least according to several angry Drew Ryniewicz fans ... whose violent threats have Paula and Nicole fearing for their lives.
According to our sources, Paula and Nicole both got the cold shoulder from Simon Cowell after the show ... who was "furious" with their decision. But that's nothing compared to the abusive tweets and Facebook messages they've received. Some of the messages read:
-- "F**K you paula you dumb c**t you voted off the most talented person on your f**king show. i hope you die you DUMB B***H."
-- "I hope you die, you selfish----------"
-- "@NicoleScherzy @paulaabdul go die"
Sources on the show tell us Paula and Nicole are shocked by the harassing messages and neither has experienced a reaction so strong before.

A chance encounter brings these three women together who vow to take down Ricky Bahl and get their money back. The next step is the actual plan. Enter Ishika Desai (Anushka Sharma), a young and ambitious girl whose street smart ways will one day, very soon, get her to the top. The furious trio, one professional con-man and a girl who loves adventure. The game is set in Goa. The rules will be made as they go along.
