Top 10 Female Playback Singers of 2011
Our leading ladies and item girls will be nowhere near half as attractive without the talented singers that voice their musical numbers. What’s more, while our cinematic experiences with our on-screen goddesses have a time limit, our playback goddesses are always with us in iPods, tablets, computers, radios and more. This year Bollyspice salutes the 10 female playback singers who astounded us with their vocals throughout the year.
10. Neha Bhasin
Ms, Bhasin (of ‘Viva!’ and ‘Kuch Khaas’ (Fashion) fame) epitomised the image of a Punjabi rock chick and commanded a nation to rock and roll with her with her performance on ‘Dhunki’ from Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. While Katrina Kaif may/may not have done justice to her vocalisations, Neha sure did make a place for herself in our hearts and on this list.
9. Nandani Srikar
Ms. Srikar successfully vocalised a classical indian/rock fusion with ‘Bhare Naina’ (Ra.One) this year and proved that classical singers have just as much style and appeal as the mainstream singers. Her emotionally charged rendition was a pleasure to listen to and beautifully narrated the sombre portion of the film. Here’s hoping we hear more of her in 2012.
8. Usha Uthup
What to say about this living legend? She has made a sudden comeback with ‘Darling’ (7 Khoon Maaf) and ‘Yeh Hai Maya’ (Don 2) this year and music enthusiasts cannot be more overjoyed. Her elegant and powerful vocals make for a delightful listen.
7. Harshdeep Kaur
Ms. Kaur, Sufi Ki Sultana and winner of Junoon reminded the doubtful why she was victorious in the aforementioned televised competitions. ‘Katiya Karoon’ from Rockstarwas hugely applauded despite being tucked away in male-orientated album thanks to Harshdeep’s immaculate rendition. She was also briefly heard in ‘Jhak Maar Ke’ (Desi Boyz) with Neeraj Shridhar which may not have been that elegant but Harshdeep stood out in any case and made her way into our list.
6. Mahalaxmi Iyer
Ms. Iyer’s vocals never seem to resonate in Hindi films as much as they deserve. However, this year she voiced the extremely popular ‘Laung Da Lashkara’ and ‘Rola Pe Gaya’ from Patiala House that got a lot of applause. She hit those flirty Punjabi nuances on the spot and complimented her duet partners well. In doing so she sealed her fate as one of our top 10 singers for 2011.
5. Aditi Singh Sharma
Ms. Sharma possibly voiced the most coolest songs of the year, ‘Choomantar’ (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan), ‘Dheon Dheon’ (Mujhse Fraandship Karoge), amongst others (‘Aali Re’ and ‘Dilli’ from No One Killed Jessica and Luv Ka The End’s title track). Youthful to a fault (there is a definite danger of being typecast) and infectiously trendy, Aditi is undoubtedly one of the rising stars of 2011.
4. Alyssa Mendonsa
Ms. Mendonsa took airwaves by storm with ‘Khawbon Ke Parindey’ (Zindagi Na Milengi Dobara) in what seemed like minutes away from her debut in ‘Uff! Teri Ada’ (Karthik Calling Karthik). Daughter of Loy Mendonsa (of Shankar-Eshaan-Loy), Alyssa’s unearthly and angelic vocals set her apart from the current crop of female singers sealing her as a voice to watch/hear out for in the years to come.
3. Anushka Manchanda
Anushka Manchanda set the airwaves on fire with the sultry delivery of “Aaj mere liye chair keech raha hai, kal meri skirt keechega” from the reformatted ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ (titled ‘Mit Jaaye Gham’). As if that line wasn’t enough to get listeners’ blood flowing she followed it by screaming “Ooche se occha banda, potty pe baythe nanga, phir kahike society, saali kaheka pakhanda‘. She delivered two very contradictory sentences with ease, oomph and confidence that many of her peers would not have been able manage and this is why Anushka Machanda is/will be irreplaceable! For those with a keener ear for music check out Ms. Manchanda’s other song from this year, ‘Piya Kesariyo’ from Hum Tum Shabana which was also a scorcher.
2. Shreya Ghosal
Ms. Ghosal is what Lata Mangeshkar was before Alka Yagnik and Kavita Krishnamurti took the centre stage in 90s and now she has essentially replaced the aforementioned ladies in the current era. Shreya had a super 2011 with undeniable hits like ‘Saathiya’ (Singham), ‘Saibo’ (Shor In The City), ‘Teri Meri’ (Bodyguard), ‘Rab Rakha’ (Love Breakups Zindagi) and ‘Accha Lagta Hai’ (Arakshan). She also showcased her classical achievements with ‘Saans Albeli’ (Aarakshan) and give listeners a hint of what’s to come in 2012 with ‘Chikni Chameli’ (Agneepath). Naturally, Ghoshal is still going strong since the glorious moment we heard her voice Paro for Bansali’s Devdas in 2002.
1. Sunidhi Chauhan
Not a lot of female singers have achieved and/or possess what Ms. Chauhan does, that is, the uncanny ability to sing any song with a precision and conviction that knows no bounds. Til date only Asha Bhosle can pull it off . However, since her breakthrough performance in Ram Gopal Verma’s Mast, Sunidhi has been slowly attempting and undoubtedly conquering all genres of Indian music. This year when she wasn’t getting us hot under our collars with ‘Shake It Saiyan’ (Rascals), ‘Chandigardh Ki Star (Buddha Hoga Tera Baap) and ‘Aa Zara’ (Murder 2) she was vocalising musical gold with ‘Tu’ (My Friend Pinto), ‘Thoda Sa Pyaar’ (Kuch Luv Jaisa), ‘Te Amo’ (Dum Maaro Dum) and ‘Sufiaana’ (The Dirty Picture). So, whether, it be a romantic duet, a sober sufi, a scorching item number, an adrenalised dance track or a situational number, Ms Chauhan has you covered!
Special Mentions:
Ritu Pathak, for picking up the slack in the wake of Sheila and Munni with ‘Razia’ (Thank You) and ‘Jalebi Bai’ (Double Dhamaal).
Hamsika Iyer, for making the Hindi audiences go crazy for that brief rendition of Tamil lyrics in ‘Chammak Challo’, which was later discovered to be incorrectly written.

Top 10 Male Playback Singers of 2011
Playback singers are the unsung heroes of Indian Cinema (no pun intended). This year, for the very first time, Bollyspice would like to congratulate the following 10 male playback singers for their outstanding work in Indian Cinema in 2011.
10. Mika Singh
No one does a mass entertainer quite like Mika Singh and 2011 was no different with crowd-pleasing hits like like ‘Desi Beats’ (Bodyguard), ‘Dhinka Chika’ (Ready), ‘Saj Dhaj Ke’ (Mausam), ‘Pyaar Do’ (Thank You), ‘F.A.L.T.U’ and ‘Hero’ (Desi Boyz).
9. Shankar Mahadevan
Shankar Mahadevan began the year with a brilliant desi/urban mesh-up, ‘Rola Pe Gaya’ (Patiala House) and followed through with thought provoking ‘Der Lagi’ (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara) and ‘Roshni’ (Aarakshan). However, it was the obscure ‘Chand Pal Ke Humsafar’ (Mod) that was the most impressive.
8. K.K
This year K.K was the voice of the Boyz in Desi Boyz, the Brother in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and ultimately Don in Don 2: The Chase Continues. Comparisons with Shaan aside K.K did a fine job with the said top-ticket but his renditions for I Am’s ‘Isi Baat Pe’ and ‘Bhojal Si’ were the ones that were truly commendable.
7. Ash King
Ash King bowled us over in 2011 with the lovey-dovey ‘Te Amo’ (Dum Maro Dum) and ‘I Love You’ (Bodyguard), making the numbers runaway hits. Ash King has quickly become one of the most promising debuts in Bollywood. You’ll soon hear him singing for Imran Khan in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu.
6. Shafqat Amanat Ali
2011 was a rare year because we were graced with 4 tracks from the incorrigible Shafqat Amanat, namely the Sufi version of ‘Jaane Kyon’ (Always Kabhi Kabhi), ‘Kyun Main Jaagon’ (Patiala House), ‘Dildara’ (Ra.One) and ‘Chayee Hai Tanhayee’ (Love Breakups Zindagi), with ‘Kyun Main Jaagon’ being the crème dela crème.
5. Akon
The most listened, downloaded, loved and hated song of 2011 was ‘Chammak Challo’ and the man that made this possible, Akon, does not even speak Hindi. Yet he had a whole nation, if not the world, grooving to “Wanna be my chammak challo”. While living up to ‘Chammak Challo’ will be insufferably hard, here’s to seeing a few more collaborations with Akon in 2012 and beyond.
4. Suraj Jaggan
2011 was a rocking year for Mr. Jagan, literally. Firstly, there was ‘Dil Dil Hai’ (7 Khoon Maaf), then ‘Akkad Bakkad’ (Bhindi Bazaar Inc) and ‘Karma Is a Bitch’ (Shor in the City), followed by ‘Jaa Chudail’ (Dehli Belly). However, if the rock was too much for you, he also soothed your eardrums with ‘Baby When You Talk To Me’ (Patiala House), ‘Koi Aa Raha Paas Hai’ (Pyaar Ka Punchnama), ‘Dil Ko Dhadakne Do’ (Zindagi Na Milengi Dobara) and ‘Choo Le’ (Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge). In short, something for everyone!
3. Shahid Malyya
Mr. Mallya is easily the most promising debut of 2011. His youthful soul-stirring vocals with a healthy dollop of Sufi made ‘Rabba Main To Mar Gaya Oye’ and ‘Ek Tu Hi’ from Mausam overnight favourites with the romantics and cynics alike, while ‘Do Dhaari Talwar’ (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) showed us that he can do a cheeky item number as convincingly as well.
2. Mohit Chauhan
Mixed reviews aside, Mohit Chauhan epitomised Jordan/Janardhan Jakhar alike with equal elan. In doing so he raised the bar for singers in India and sealed his position as one of the most talented singers of the era.
1. Rahet Fateh Ali Khan
Oddly enough Mr. Khan didn’t have a many releases this year but that didn’t stop him from becoming the pillar for the nation’s romantics with ‘Teri Meri’ (Bodyguard). While this over night love anthem couldn’t have fuelled the passions of star-crossed lovers more, it was the subtleness of ‘Isq Risk’ (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) that was more endearing of the two.
Special Mentions:
- Ali Zafar for the energetic ‘Madhubala’ (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) that had all of us doing our “U.P-wala thumkas” to it and ‘F.U.N Fun Fanaa’ (Luv Ka The End) which as teeny-bopper as it was had us all infected.
- Kunal Ganjawala for the beautiful ‘Maula’ (Saathiya) and those unbelievably sweet renditions in My Friend Pinto.
- Vishal Dadlani for being the new voice of Don, gracing us with a rarity of his softer side with ‘Woh Aadat Hai Who’ (Patiala House) and the junoon-filled ‘Ek Junoon’ (Zindagi Na Milengi Dobara).
